The Next Big Thing
by Jonathon Alsop
March 2000

Three impulses make great wine: geography, history, and good luck. The 1998 vintage from southern France's Rhone valley has all three in abundance, and it's heading our way. The buzz on these wines -- typically gutsy country red blends of syrah, mourvedre, grenache, and others -- has been tremendous, along the lines of the famous 1989 and 1990 vintages. The first few 1998s are just now in stores. 1998 Chateau de Segries "Lirac" (about $12 at Marty's in Newton) is ripe, juicy and delicious. 1998 Le Pigeoulet en Provence (about $11, Blanchard's, Andover Liquors and others) has great concentration of fruit and lots of smoke and leather. Get in line!
